When looking at the sustainability of a new design or the thermal efficiency of your new windows and doors, air tightness, or air permeability, is the second most important characteristic of the windows and doors, after thermal insulation.

Recent studies estimate that up to 40% of heat loss from buildings can be traced back to windows or gaps around a window installation so the air permeability tests of your chosen windows and doors are an important deciding factor.

Recent studies estimate that up to 40% of heat loss from buildings can be traced back to windows or gaps around a window installation so the air permeability tests of your chosen windows and doors are an important deciding factor.

The air permeability of a standalone window or door is tested and designated under the standard building test EN 12207. This tests the amount of air or drafts that will travel through the opening vent, connections and surrounding frame by forcing air through the window or door using positive and negative pressures.

For a draft free, efficient window or door you should look for aluminium windows or doors with an air permeability test of Class 4. This indicates that up to 600Pa of air pressure was passed through the windows with minimal drafts.

A second aspect of the air tightness to an installation is the installations process its self. Ensuring that the window is properly sealed and fitted squarely within your opening is important to reduce heat loss and drafts. Make sure your builder is experienced with fitting aluminium frames before appointing them; alternatively Hedgehog Windows can provide a fully certified FENSA approved installation process for your new windows and doors to ensure efficient air tightness to your installation.
