Timber

When replacing or installing new windows, doors, bi-fold doors or sliding doors on a building project, home owners normally have the choice as to what frame material is best for their project.

Hardwood timber windows and modern aluminium frames are the two most popular and high quality framing options available for modern buildings. Hardwood Timber's a very traditional window framing material and creates a classic window design seen on many period homes.

Timber windows can be painted or stained to create a window framing finish to suit your building design and can then be re-painted over the years to suit differing tastes or trends.

As a standard construction material wood has a naturally higher thermal performance than any other construction material and is the main choice of frame for PassivHaus buildings.

The main downside to timber framing is maintenance. These types of naturally absorbent materials need treating and maintaining on a regular basis throughout their life span and are difficult to repair if damaged. Slim frames aren’t normally possible with timber framing sections in order to support the weight of the glass within the frames.

Aluminium Windows

Aluminium is the modern window and door frame material. It has been used for many years in the commercial building market due to its cost effectiveness, its durability, ease of installation and its easy maintenance.

Windows made from aluminium have a sleeker, neater appearance than frames of other materials. You can create perfect mitre joints and smooth joints all in a slim frame suitable for modern architectural design.

With a strength-to-weight ratio that exceeds all other framing materials, windows and doors made with an aluminium frame are available at much larger sizes. Bifold doors made with aluminium can be up to 3m high by 1.2m wide per panel.

Once powder coated aluminium doesn’t rust, discolour or peel and needs little to no maintenance throughout its lifetime.

Aluminium frames are much more flexible in design than any other framing material. The process of powder coating helps create a material with more design choices than any other window or door.

Aluminium can be powder coated any RAL colour (any colour imaginable) and aluminium frames can also be dual coloured to have a different colour frame inside and outside.

The strength and lightweight nature of aluminium also allows it to be used on windows or many different shapes and configurations.

A disadvantage of aluminium frames in the past was thermal performance. But now, with the advancement of polyamide technology, slim and extremely efficient thermal breaks are included on all modern windows or doors to stop cold bridging through the conductive metal material.

Now aluminium windows or doors have the same and increasingly better thermal performance than similar timber framing options.
