How to Create a Heritage Glazing Design to Your Home

As traditional architecture comes back into fashion the design and creation of windows and doors with a heritage glazing design also becomes more popular. There are various ways in which you can create a heritage glazing design to your project and which options are best for you will depend on many factors, including whether or not your building is listed or in a conservation area. Below are some of the main considerations for you when looking to create a heritage glazing design for your project and some of the product options available to you.

Frame Colours

The best colour for your heritage window or door installation will depend on what type of appearance you are hoping to achieve.

For a steel look system, a dark grey frame works best at recreating the design and appearance of a heritage steel window or door. For projects looking to create the appearance of timber then a white powder coated frame is normally the most suitable but aluminium frames can be powder coated any RAL colour that you need. This then allows you to exactly match the design and appearance you require for the heritage glazing design.

Glazing Bar Designs

Glazing bars can be applied to an aluminium window or door system in whatever design you require for your building.  This could be used to create a steel look window or door, a modern Bauhaus design or traditional timber style system.

The colour of your glazing bars should be powder coated to match the colour of your exterior frames so that the entire installation looks like one cohesive unit.

Another important design factor for an applied glazing bar design is to ensure that it looks as if the bar completely dissects the glass unit and goes all the way through the glazing. You can do this be including spacer bars within the double or triple glazed units wherever a glazing bar is going to be applied. When the glazing bar is then applied to the surface of the glass it then looks as though it is a ‘true’ glazing bar which goes all the way through the glass.

Window or Door Types

Again, the type of window or door you use for your glazing design will entirely depend on the size of the opening as well as the heritage design you are looking to recreate.

For a traditional steel look door system, a French door or Belgium door opening is very well suited. A French door opening is a double opening door with one hinged door swinging outwards or inwards. A Belgium door opening is a French door with fixed side lights on either side of the opening. This type of door opening is best for larger apertures where the opening is larger than the maximum opening door size available.

When looking for a heritage window opening there are a few different opening types that are available that will be suitable.

For a timber look heritage window you could utilise a specially designed aluminium sash window. These vertically sliding window openings are great at recreating the design of a traditional timber sliding sash window but in an easy to maintain aluminium frame.

Most aluminium sash windows will have a range of design options available so that you can either recreate a traditional timber window design or create a more modern aluminium window with a timber style. Decorative sash horns can also be included in the sash window design to give a really authentic heritage window design.

Traditional steel windows come in a wide variety of opening types which can easily be recreated using a heritage metal frame. From side hung to top hung to larger window configurations; you can then get the right window design for your building.

Traditional Ironmongery

Most heritage glazing systems will have a range of traditional ironmongery available for you to choose from. This is especially applicable for steel look windows and doors which traditionally have a very specific design to their handles.

‘Monkey Tail’ or ‘Bulb End’ handles are great for art deco designs. You should also look into the designs available for the peg stays (if you are including them).

Heritage Glazing Systems

You can include traditional ironmongery and integrated glazing bars into any aluminium window or door to create that traditional heritage style to the glazing. However the best effect can be achieved by using a specifically designed system for heritage glazing.

A heritage glazing system will have framing profiles that are specifically designed to look like a traditional steel or timber window or door. Hedgehog Aluminium fabricate and install a wide range of aluminium windows and doors as well as some specifically designed Heritage glazing systems:
