Understanding Thermal Performance

The thermal insulation of your new windows and doors is an important factor to take into account when choosing your preferred system. But how is this tested? And what does a ‘U Value’ mean?

In construction all building materials are given a ‘U-Value’ to denote its relative thermal performance (or insulation). It is written in the unit of W/m2K, this essentially means the amount of energy (Watts) that travels through the surface of the material at normal temperatures (Kelvin).

When it comes to your window and door installations the overall ‘U-Value’ of the window or glazed door is referred to as the ‘Uw Value’.

Although we can give an average or estimated Uw Value the actual overall Uw Value for your window or door must be calculated on an installation by installation basis and will vary depending on the size and configuration of the glass installation.

A ‘Uw Value’ is calculated by using the individual thermal performances of the materials involved in the window or door, including the Ug value (the centre pane thermal performance of the glass panel) and the Uf value (the thermal performance of the framing used).

Building Regulations Part L documents state what an acceptable thermal performance is for all building elements, including windows and doors.

The current version of the Building Regulations for England and Wales states that all windows, glazed doors and rooflights to a new build home should have a Uw value of no less than 2.00W/m2K and no less than 1.6W/m2K (or WER Band C) for replacement windows to an existing home or in extensions to existing properties.
