Essentially, a Dummy Vent is an additional element of framing added to a fixed aluminium window to create the same framing thickness as an opening window.

They are sometimes incorporated into aluminium window installations in order to create a uniform appearance to all windows, whether they are opening or close. The appearance of a dummy vent is exactly the same as an opening aluminium window from the exterior except, a Dummy Vent cannot be opened and therefore does not have a handles, hinges or a locking mechanism.

In cheap window installations, where framing profiles are thicker, dummy vents are used often to balance a window design. When you are using slim framed aluminium windows a dummy vent is not always required to attain that slim framed aesthetic desired.

Hedgehog Aluminium Systems, Bridgewater Road project is an example where dummy vents were not used, this illustrates you don’t need to use a dummy vent for a neat, modern window design.

In comparison, here is a Hedgehog Aluminium project using dummy vents in the middle of each window installation, but was designed to look the same as the top hung venting windows either side.

As you can see clearly in these images, dummy vents do not mean a bulky, unattractive window, likewise, a window design without dummy vents doesn’t have to be designed so it is obvious dummy vents have been used.

Additionally, with powder coating technology, aluminium windows and doors can be coloured to match your design requirements and coated for protection from the external environment.

Dummy vents are a good way to assure the window looks unified, furthermore, if a large window is required then one opening vent and a dummy vent could help improve the security of your home instead of one large opening vent, again keeping a uniformed appearance.
