Windows and glass doors, just like other working elements of your home, wear and loose performance over time. They may start to require more general maintenance or stop working altogether.

General advice is that if your windows are over 10 years old then they should be replaced but it may be prudent to replace windows before that time if they are failing to perform. Drafts through the windows, condensation within the glass, condensation or frost on the inner frame and sticking of the opening mechanisms are all signs that your windows should be replaced as a matter of priority.

The most prevalent reason for home owners to replace their windows is energy efficiency. With energy bills increasing home owners are more aware of the efficiency of their own home and the components that make up the exterior skin.

If you are experiencing frost or condensation on the inner part of your window frames, if there is condensation on the internal of a double glazed unit or if your windows are made with single glazing they will not be thermally efficient enough to meet current thermal regulations.

You should always replace your windows with thermally broken aluminium framing to stop any internal frosting on the frames in cold weather. For the glass replace using a double glazed unit with a radiant heat reflecting low-e coating at minimum. These highly efficient insulated glass units will greatly improve the thermal efficiency of your windows, reducing heating costs and increasing the comfort levels inside your home.

Noticeable drafts or air leaks through your windows frames are also an indication that these windows will need to be replaced. Even the most well engineered frames will allow some slight air filtration but it shouldn’t ever be anything that you will notice.

Traditional wooden frames can become warped over time, creating gaps around the installation whilst the sealants around traditional metal frames expand and contract overtime allowing air leakage through the frames.

As Hedgehog explained in one of our previous articles that focuses on air tightness, air leakage through windows can contribute up to 40% of heat loss from your home. So if you notice drafts through your windows, get them replaced.

Obviously if windows or doors are becoming more difficult to open or are stuck they should be replaced. Non-opening windows can be a serious safety issue in cases of fire or emergency escape. Other factors that you might not necessarily have considered, such as noise infiltration through windows or UV fading of furniture through glass, can all be improved if windows are replaced with modern, efficient alternatives.

All Hedgehog replacement windows can be designed in keeping with the nature of your home for a traditional or modern appearance. To keep the exterior appearance of your home constant you should replace all windows on one face of your home at the same time.
